What is SLAT?

SLAT stands for Symbiosis Law Aptitude Test, which is one of the two competitive exams for admission to Symbiosis Law School in Pune, India. It is designed to test a candidate’s understanding of the Indian legal system and their abilities in logical reasoning, problem- solving and debate. The SLAT exam is usually offered at the end of each semester in October/November by Symbiosis Law School. A few days before the exam, hundreds of students queue up outside the school premises to be one of only 25 people who will have a chance to sit for it. The entrance examination examines key skills that play a significant role in law such as English language skills and problem-solving abilities. The applicants are expected to demonstrate their knowledge on topics like Human Rights, Constitutional Law, Criminal Laws and Politics & International Relations.

What is CLAT?

CLAT stands for Common Law Admission Test, which is a test offered in India to those who are interested in pursuing law school. As with the LSAT, it has been deemed the standard measure of your skill and knowledge base as a prospective law student. It is also another standardised test that has been offered since 2013, but it has undergone significant updates in recent years. It is a timed test, with multiple-choice questions and an essay section that are intended to measure the skills you need to succeed in law school. Simply put, it is the entrance exam for law school. If possible, take CLAT prep classes which usually consist of several months of studying using CLAT Prep Books to gain an edge over your competition.

Which is better  SLAT or CLAT?

To sum it up, the CLAT Exam is generally easier than the SLAT. The CLAT can be described as a ‘surface level’ understanding of the law whereas the SLAT is more of a ‘deeper look’. This does not mean that there are any questions in CLAT which are not covered in SLAT. In my opinion, SLAT is a better test that requires more intense preparation and knowledge. In the chart below, you can see a comparison of the two tests and their respective difficulty levels.

While the SLAT exam is designed to give you a holistic understanding of the law and equip you with the skills to succeed in law school, CLAT is designed specifically for those who are interested in practising law after graduating. While CLAT has several pre-set essays to choose from, preparing one’s own essay can be quite difficult. Also, while the SLAT is generally more challenging, the CLAT has additional sets of questions that can either help or hinder your score.

It is advisable to attempt both tests and compare your scores with each other in order to get an overall idea of which exam is easier. Hello! I am applying for law school and the CLAT is the requirement. I was wondering if there are any resources that would really help me study. For example, someone like me who doesn’t have a huge background in legal studies or who has never taken any tests before? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
